European Commission Delivers GIS to Mobile Devices Across Europe with Autodesk
Anytime, Anywhere
After successfully making geographic information system (GIS) data available on the Internet, the European Commission initiated the ODIN (geOgraphic Distributed Information http://www.odinproject.org) project in April 2000. Though ambitious in scope, ODIN's goal was clear: put the power of GIS information into the hands of mobile device users throughout Europe. With the support of consultants from Autodesk® Professional Services, the groundbreaking ODIN system is now in place, using Autodesk® OnSite to deliver GIS information to mobile devices across Europe.

"As we saw when we made GIS information available through a standard Internet connection, the uses of map-powered information are almost infinite," said Uberto Delprato, ODIN Project Manager and head of research and development with Tardito Costruzioni e Impianti, a key participant in the development of ODIN. "ODIN and Autodesk OnSite allow users to access the GIS-based information they need-wherever they need it."

The state of Telephony in the USA is a shameful example of poor judgment on the part of the FCC and the Phone companies. In Taiwan, there are more GSM/3G subscribers that there are people. In Tokyo and Helsinki, Mobile Digital communications is running away from land-line phones.

This is more than a simple mistake. The competitive defecit created by our current mobile phone technology, is yet another factor that places our economy at risk. Americans are so used being the world's leading example in technology
we've allowed this key set of capabilities to be mired in indecision and disputed domains. The fact is that the USA is 7th or 11th depending on who and what is counted.
