The begining and the end of imagination
11 Dec 2003
In the early scenes of the movie "Sea Biscuit," the voice-over talks about the "20s and "30's following the "Great Depression." At one point in the script, the voice-over talks about the Model T Ford and the revolution that was centered not on the car itself, but the assembly line process used to manufacture it. The voice-over makes a wonderfully insightful statement: "It was the beginning and the end of imagination, all at the same time." Hand crafted objects and the skilled people who made them would eventually be replaced by products made with a superior technology. Back then, we were on our way toward living in the Mass Production Society. The same fundamental change is underway today as the first 3G, network-connected video phones come into use. We are on our way toward a global society that will be connected more intimately than at any time in the history of the planet. We may look back on these years, as the movie looks back on the pre-assembly line world and say again, "It was the beginning and the end of imagination, all at the same time." In a real-time video everything world, we must ask what will be the fate of paper-based media, television as we know it, and radio and telephony as stand-alone media? Whether it is famine, flood, natural disaster or the mundane events of everyday life, it will be chronicled by the observers at that location, as it happens. All you'll need to do is locate the ecasting URL. How this changes our daily lives and our society remains to be seen but most certainly it will change us and we well may feel the same wistful loss of imagination as "eidetic imagery" - literal sound and graphics - replaces storytelling.
